This episod is dedicated to an important event, August 2, the International Holocaust Memorial Day for Sinti and Roma.
This day can also be heard under the name "Kali traš", which in translation from the Romani language means "black horror".
Why was this particular day, August 2, chosen to honor the victims of the Roma Holocaust?
And the whole thing is a tragic event that took place on the night of August 2 to 3, 1944 in the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Then the so-called Zigeunerlager ("Gypsy camp"), that is, the camp in which the Sinti and Roma were located, was liquidated. About 3,000 Sinti and Roma lost their lives in the gas chambers in just one night. They were men and women, children and the elderly.
In total, historians estimate that about 500,000 Sinti and Roma were killed in Nazi-occupied Europe. Many others were imprisoned in concentration camps, forced to perform forced labor, subjected to forced sterilization and medical experiments. According to historians, in just one Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, about 20 thousand Sinti and Roma died or were killed in gas chambers at the hands of the Nazis.
August 2, the International Holocaust Memorial Day for Sinti and Roma is not just a day of commemoration. And this is also a reminder to the modern generation about the high value and dignity of human life.

The International Conference on Romani Linguistics (ICRL) was founded in Hamburg in 1993 by Yaron Matras and has since been held at approximately two-year intervals in Amsterdam, Prague, Manchester, Sofia, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Graz, Stockholm, Oslo, Paris, Belgrade (online), and Milan. This year, the conference took place in Vienna, a picturesque city with a rich history.
I had the wonderful opportunity to be invited to attend this event and talk to the participants and organizers of the conference. I invite you to join me for a few minutes to immerse yourself in the world of Romani linguistics and learn about the current situation in Romani research.

Who are the Ursari of Romania and Moldova?
This ethnic group of Roma is known as Ursari, Richinara or Mechkari.
All three names are related to their professional occupation - training and performing with bears. “Urs” is Latin for bear, “rich” comes from Sanskrit “rkša”, and Bulgarian “мечка”.
The Ursari of Romania and Moldova are representatives of the Balkan group of Romani dialects, which distinguishes their language from other groups of Roma in these territories, who speak mainly Vlach Romani dialects.
It is believed that during the Ottoman Empire, Ursari were part of the Ottoman army. They made and repaired weapons, worked with copper metal products. And their second occupation was training and performing with bears to entertain the public.
They are also known to perform with monkeys, That's how they got another name Maymunari. Maimuna is a Serbo-Croatian word.

In gypsy and traveler culture marrying outside of the community has long been frowned upon. But with their nomadic lifestyle under threat and the younger generation becoming more influenced by non-traveler culture, intermarriage is on the increase.
This episode explores further the cultural divide between gypsies and non-gypsies and looks at what happens when the two worlds are thrust together in marriage.

In this video, we will explore the history and culture of the Romani people, also known as Gypsies, and address the harmful stereotype that they are prone to stealing.
Firstly, we will discuss the origins of the Romani people and their migration from India to Europe in the 14th century. We will also touch upon the discrimination and persecution they faced throughout history, which led to their nomadic lifestyle.
Then, we will examine why the stereotype of Gypsies as thieves persists in society. We will challenge this harmful stereotype by showing that it is not based on fact but instead rooted in racism and prejudice.
Finally, we will offer suggestions for combatting these stereotypes and working towards a more inclusive and respectful society.
Join us as we seek to understand and appreciate the complex history and culture of the Romani people and reject harmful stereotypes.

For 500 years, Transylvania’s Gábor people have held onto their values and rituals. This film explores the insular world of the Gábor Roma, and asks whether they can maintain their traditional lives in a globalized world.
The Romanian village of Karácsonyfalva is the center of the Gábor Roma community. More than 1,000 Gábor live there. The men wear large black hats, the women long skirts. The men travel all over Europe as traders, while the women raise the children. Most Gábor belong to the Adventist denomination. Many only learned to read in order to study the Bible. Abstaining from pork and above all from alcohol and tobacco makes them targets of curiosity. Considered aristocratic among the Roma people, the Gábor have their own laws in all areas of life. Problems are solved within the community; in cases of conflict, even the police turn to the community leaders. Their biggest and most important celebration is the wedding, the foundation of their society. Gábor marry exclusively among themselves. For this reason, girls are removed from school at age 11 and married at 14. Boys move from organized education to the "school of life" at 14. This documentary follows the marriage of 14-year-old Mundra to 16-year-old Bobbi, while giving a portrait of their families and the wider community. For the first time, they share an insight into their exciting, colorful, contradictory and insular world, in which wealth and poverty collide. This is a tight-knit community, one caught between tradition and the pressures of modernity.
