Stereotypes about Roma women will be broken and more than that, Romani culture will be celebrated. As a Roma woman and actress herself, Mihaela talks fearlessly about integration, attributes that the society sets when it comes to Roma women and more than that about how can we integrate these minorities in the cultural life.


Mihaela Drăgan is a Roma actress, activist and playwright, who lives and works in Bucharest. Her performances focus on the connection between theatre, Roma identity and social justice. She is the president of the Roma Actors Association and the president of the board of E-Romnja – The Association for Promoting Roma Women’s Rights. In 2014, she founded Giuvlipen Theatre Company, the first Roma feminist theatre group, formed by professional actresses of Roma origins in Bucharest. Their latest performance, Gadjo Dildo, talks about sexuality, love, queerness and exotization of Roma women. She studied acting and Romani language and collaborated over the years with Logos Theatre and Theatre for Few in projects that focused on expressionism, eurhythmics and acrobatics.

Ein Abend der polnischen Roma-Kultur

Das RDS Gipsy Art Trio „Phenjoripe“, eröffnen den Abend mit RomaShowSequenzen. Sie erinnern an die legendären russischen Roma Theater Aufführungen, deren Zauber auch die Bühnenkunst der polnischen Roma beeinflusste. Bis heute begeistern diese Darbietungen aus Tanztheater, Lied und Instrumentalmusik das Publikum und sind fester Bestandteil der polnischen Kulturlandschaft. Eingeflochten in diese farbenprächtige, lebensbejahende Show sind Gedichte von Polens berühmter Roma-Dichterin Bronisława Wajs („Papusza“) sowie Lieder der Polska und Russka Roma - dargeboten zur Gitarre von der polnischen Sängerin Dorota Szewczyk . Zum Abschluss wird der preisgekrönte polnische Spielfilm"Papusza" (2013), Regie: Joanna Kos-Krauze und Krzysztof Krauze, gezeigt. Dieses beeindruckende Filmwerk zeigt nicht nur den Lebens- und Leidensweg der empfindsamen Dichterin sondern zeichnet in ästhetisch schönen Bildern ein eindrucksvolles Sittengemälde der wandernden TieflandRoma von den 30-ger Jahren bis zu den 60-ger Jahren, der Zeit des "großen Halt".

What's the Romani word for "feminism"? The answer is "Giuvlipen" – which also happens to be the name of a Romanian theatre company showcasing "some of the most widespread stereotypes about Roma women across the world".

Formed by a group of Roma actresses in 2014, the troupe's performance explores and busts stereotypes about Roma women and culture, challenging perceptions held both within and outside the community. The theatre company's founders invented the term "Giuvlipen" because there was no previous Romani word for feminism.

"Roma art has always been marginalized because of the segregation of Roma people", said the group in a 2016 interview. "There is a certain curiosity about Roma women in non-Roma communities…it was quite a surprise to observe through our audiences how invisible Roma women actually were and how the simple fact of our existence was a novelty."

But such "invisibility" continues to deprive millions of Roma in Europe from access to schooling and employment, despite being the largest ethnic minority group in the region. The European Union created a plan in 2011 to help integrate Roma communities into the group, and while some progress has been made, EU Commission officials say much more work needs to be done to improve standards of living for Roma communities.

In August 2017, EU Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans said: "Member States have to accelerate their efforts to improve Roma integration if we are to put an end to the prejudices, segregation and discrimination still felt by Roma today."

So, how are Giuvlipen and other Roma artists using their talents to change negative narratives about their communities?

In this episode, The Stream speaks with Roma activists to discuss the impact of their artwork, and to explore the discrimination and challenges they regularly encounter.

Roma in New York

They are known by many names -- including "Gypsies" and "Travelers." But they favor the name Roma. They are among the most widely-spread and least-understood ethnic groups on earth.

Faith Lapidus looks at Romany culture and its influences in New York City. Thousands of the world's estimated twelve million Roma live in that city.

Romany music and celebration were heard and seen at the Drom nightclub recently. The club was the center of the three-week-long New York Gypsy Festival.

The festival presents the musical cultures of a people who moved north from India about a thousand years ago. They settled mainly in southern and eastern Europe, the Balkans and present-day Russia.

Producer Mehmet Dede says the festival is aimed at those who, like him, are "Gypsy at heart."

"I would like to think that in New York City we are all a little bit of Gypsy."

The Roma have been influenced by the lands in which they have lived. Similarly, New York City has been influenced by the immigrant groups that moved there, including the Roma.

Ismail Lumanovsky leads The New York Gypsy All Stars musical group. He sees himself as a cultural ambassador.

"By playing Romany music, I wanna offer the New York audience a very free way of looking at music...of expressing the feelings in the moment."

The Gypsy spirit seems to work for New York's downtown music scene.

"It's kinda' like a European blues."

"They can feel music. And they...you feel that they love playing."

Petra Gelbart teaches non-Roma the Romany language, dances and music. And she corrects misinformation.

"We're not nomadic for the most part. We are people who have been settled for hundreds of years or have certainly been trying to settle and get jobs."

Roma have long considered themselves outsiders. They have been treated as a dirty, dishonest people in many countries. Throughout history, Roma have experienced extreme discrimination.

Nazi forces murdered an estimated half-million Roma during World War Two. Today, anti-Roma violence is increasing in western and southern Europe.

Even in the United States, some Roma fear prejudice. Petra Gelbart's mother worked at a bank.

"She just wasn't gonna tell people that she's a Gypsy, because -- as she put it -- 'the minute something goes missing, who do you think they're gonna blame?'

Still, many New York Roma are proud to continue traditions Roma are known for, like fortune telling. Roma dancer Pirozhka Racz says despite globalization, there will always be Roma.

”Art is a tool to convey what really matters.” Romani artist Małgorzata Mirga-Tas uses art to reclaim and celebrate Roma history, identity, and memory. To her, art is a language and a means to change perceptions within her community.

“I focus on subjects connected to Roma culture, with identity, appropriation, and reclaiming memory, as well as notions of multiculturality and anti-Romani sentiment.” Małgorzata Mirga-Tas lives with her family in Czarna Góra, Poland. Her textile works function as a response to centuries of misrepresentation of Romani people. Mirga-Tas reinterprets history through bold, patterned fabrics and colourful compositions: “I don’t want to recount these traumatic situations using black, white, or gloomy colours. On the contrary: picking strong, patterned fabrics really matters to me, because every situation of this kind should be told in colour.”

From her studio near her home, she collaborates with a small team of women, friends and family, to bring her pieces to life: “Every time I enter my studio, I feel my life is really in place,” she says and continues: “Working with the community means working on our collective memory. Collaborative efforts challenge the stereotype of the Romani community.”

Through her art, Mirga-Tas often deal with traumatic stories of violence against Romani people, including the Holocaust. In the portrait series ‘Siukar Manusia’ Romani, Holocaust survivors are portrayed with bright colours on a dark, blue, velvet background: “There are stories that are traumatic and full of violence, and you wonder how to show them in the first place. I figured the easiest way was to show only what truly mattered,” she elaborates: “The story was about them.”

Her practice extends beyond making art; it’s also about community. Using art, Mirga-Tas bridges history and memory, giving voice to those long overlooked: “This is my mission statement: To show that we’re normal people,” Mirga-Tas says: “My art can act and change the discrimination, as can the art of other Romani artists, as I’m not the only one. Creating art and doing what I do is a part of who I am.”

Małgorzata Mirga-Tas (b. 1978, Zakopane, Poland) is a Polish-Romani artist who lives and works in Czarna Góra in southern Poland. Mirga-Tas is known for her textile collages, created with materials and fabrics gathered mainly from family and friends. A feminist perspective informs her visual storytelling and challenges stereotypical representations of Roma people. Often working in collaboration with other women, she sews pieces of clothing, handkerchiefs, tablecloths, curtains and sheets together to create vivid portraits and scenes from everyday life. Her works have been exhibited at the 42nd Biennial of Painting Bielska Jesień in 2015 (she received an honourable mention then), the 43rd Biennial of Painting Bielska Jesień in 2017, the 3rd Art Encounters Biennale in Timisoara in 2019, and the 11th Berlin Biennale in 2020. Mirga-Tas was the official Polish representative at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022 – the first Roma artist to represent any country.
