The Romani (colloquially known as the "Gypsies") are a community of European itinerants with surprising origins in northwest India. In this video, we explore the fascinating histories of two distinct Romani groups: the Roma and the Sinti. From surviving Turkic and Arab invasions, to navigating the complex social worlds of unfamiliar lands in the Middle East and Europe, this is the tale of migrant peoples who made a life for themselves despite extraordinary circumstances.

Who are the Ursari of Romania and Moldova?
This ethnic group of Roma is known as Ursari, Richinara or Mechkari.
All three names are related to their professional occupation - training and performing with bears. “Urs” is Latin for bear, “rich” comes from Sanskrit “rkša”, and Bulgarian “мечка”.
The Ursari of Romania and Moldova are representatives of the Balkan group of Romani dialects, which distinguishes their language from other groups of Roma in these territories, who speak mainly Vlach Romani dialects.
It is believed that during the Ottoman Empire, Ursari were part of the Ottoman army. They made and repaired weapons, worked with copper metal products. And their second occupation was training and performing with bears to entertain the public.
They are also known to perform with monkeys, That's how they got another name Maymunari. Maimuna is a Serbo-Croatian word.

Who are the Roma -- also colloquially called "Gypsies"? Where did they come from, and how did they end up all over Europe? How have they endured through persecution, expulsions, and political upheaval, without a state or country of their own? We trace the path of this remarkable and resilient people from their mysterious origins in India to their arrival in Constantinople and medieval Europe and through the wave of persecution and ethnic cleansing in the 1600s.

Update: A contemporary historian, Kristina Richardson, has recently researched the lives and customs of the longstanding Romani group in medieval-era Egypt, commonly called the Ghuraba. It seems likely that at least one major Roma group that migrated into Europe, particularly western Europe, derived from the Ghuraba. One can see Richardson discussing her work in various places, including here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERSduCs3Afg
